Openings
Are you excited about machine learning applied to chemical sciences? LIAC brings together chemistry, computer science, materials science, and experimental research.
Last reviewed: August 2026.
Postdoctoral Position
We have one two-year postdoctoral position on advancing strategic synthesis planning with machine learning and large language models. The project builds on our recent work in strategy-aware chemical reasoning and tool-augmented chemistry agents.
The 2026 EPFL postdoctoral starting salary is CHF 88,000 gross per year, including the 13th salary month. See the official EPFL salary scale for details.

PhD Positions
There are no immediate PhD openings. New funded positions will be posted here. Information about admission is available from the EPFL doctoral program in chemistry and chemical engineering.
Master’s Theses and Semester Projects
We regularly supervise projects for students interested in applying machine learning to chemical science. Depending on the project, you might work on chemical data, molecular representations, synthesis planning, generative models, scientific language models, or experimental optimization.
Please contact Prof. Philippe Schwaller with a short description of your interests, your CV and transcript, your availability, and a link to previous technical work if available.
Postdoctoral Fellowships
We are happy to discuss strong fellowship proposals that fit LIAC’s research directions. Relevant programs include the EPFL AI Center and Swiss AI Initiative Postdoctoral Fellowships.
We strongly encourage applications from people with different backgrounds, identities, disciplines, and career paths. Every new colleague brings a different perspective, and we see that diversity as part of doing better science.
